Uttarakhand is exceptionally beautiful during the monsoon season (July to September). Cascading waterfalls appear out of nowhere, and the entire valley turns into a lush green carpet. However, the monsoons also bring high risks. Flash floods, sudden landslides, and highway blocks can turn a peaceful road trip into a logistical nightmare if you are unprepared.

1. Track Local Weather & Road Bulletins Daily
Himalayan weather changes instantly. Before starting your drive each morning, verify road block alerts on the Uttarakhand Police official social media pages or contact the JDMK support desk. If heavy rainfall alerts are active for Chamoli or Rudraprayag, delay your travel rather than getting stuck on isolated mountain stretches.
2. Avoid Night Driving in the Hills
Landslides and mudflows occur frequently during the night when rains are heaviest. Pitch-dark roads make it impossible to spot falling pebbles or mud patches. Ensure you arrive at your destination town before 6:00 PM. Start your day early in the morning when visibility is at its peak.
3. Spot Landslide Warning Signs
While driving near cliffs, watch out for these warnings:
- Small pebbles or gravel rolling down the cliff side onto the road.
- Sudden cracks appearing on the asphalt surface.
- Murky, mud-filled water streams flowing across the highway.
If you see these signs, stop your vehicle at a safe distance and wait for clearance from border road authorities.
4. Choose Large SUV Vehicles
Small hatchbacks have low ground clearance and struggle to cross flooded water streams (known locally as *pagal nallahs*). For monsoon travel, choose SUVs like **Innova, Ertiga, or Mahindra Bolero**. Their higher engine intake and heavy tire treads handle slippery mountain climbs with ease.
5. Keep Buffer Days and Backup Supplies
Monsoon road clearances can take anywhere from 2 hours to 24 hours depending on the scale of a landslide. Always keep **1 or 2 buffer days** in your travel itinerary. Carry backup dry snacks, water bottles, and emergency medicines in your backpack in case of highway blockages.
